Hardness and everyday durability

Granite is the hardest of the three — it withstands impacts, direct heat, and scratches with practically no special care. Quartzite comes very close to that hardness while still being fully natural (not to be confused with engineered quartz). Marble is the softest of the three: it scratches and marks more easily, especially with sharp or abrasive objects.

Staining and porosity

Marble is naturally porous — wine, oil, or lemon juice can leave a mark if not wiped up quickly, and it needs periodic sealing. Granite and quartzite are far less porous, so they absorb less liquid and are far more forgiving for the daily grind of a kitchen that actually gets used.

Despite the extra care it needs, marble remains the favorite of architects and interior designers for its one-of-a-kind veining and luminosity. Granite offers more uniform, granular patterns. Long-term maintenance

Marble needs resealing roughly every 6-12 months to keep its stain resistance. Granite, with occasional sealing (every 1-2 years), is practically maintenance-free. Quartzite sits somewhere in between, though generally closer to granite than to marble.
