How to clean and maintain a marble countertop without ruining it
Marble is one of the most visually rewarding stones — and, at the same time, one of the most poorly cared for simply out of not knowing better. With a few simple habits, a marble countertop can stay flawless for decades.
Everyday cleaning
Always use a soft cloth with warm water and a neutral soap. Avoid anything containing vinegar, lemon, or any acid — these are marble's worst enemies, since they react with the calcium carbonate and dull the shine. No abrasive scourers and no generic all-purpose cleaners.
Act fast on spills
Wine, coffee, oil, or lemon juice should be wiped up immediately, not once you've finished cooking. The longer a liquid sits on the stone, the more likely it is to leave a permanent mark — especially if the sealing hasn't been renewed in a while.
Sealing: the key step almost nobody gets right
Well-sealed marble repels liquids instead of absorbing them. As a rule of thumb, check the seal once or twice a year — try the simple test of dropping a little water on the surface: if it beads up, the seal is still working; if it soaks in quickly, it's time to reseal.
Avoid direct heat
Although marble handles occasional heat well, sudden temperature changes (a boiling pot placed directly on the stone) can cause micro-cracks over time. Always use trivets.
What if it already has marks?
Many marble marks can be polished away and restored to their original state — you don't always need to replace the whole piece. At AMBZ Natural Stone we also offer polishing and restoration services for countertops and sinks that have lost their original shine. Ask us about your case with no obligation.
