Backlit onyx: the stone that turns a bathroom into a work of art

Onyx is, without question, the natural stone with the most spectacular effect there is — and probably the least known to the general public. Backlit, it stops being just a surface and becomes a piece that seems to glow from within.

What makes onyx so special?

Unlike marble or granite, onyx is translucent — light passes through it, revealing its internal veining in a way no other stone can match. Its tones range from near-transparent white to green, honey, or deep black, with every block showing a completely one-of-a-kind pattern.

Where it makes the most sense to use it

Onyx isn't the right stone for a heavy daily-use countertop — it's softer and more porous than granite or quartzite. Where it truly shines (literally) is in backlit decorative panels, design islands, sculptural sinks, or architectural details where the visual effect is the priority, not wear resistance.

How the backlighting is installed

The onyx is cut into thin slabs (usually between 1.5 and 2 cm) and mounted over a uniform LED light panel, with a structure that keeps the lighting even without hot spots. The result is an effect almost like a stained-glass window made of stone.
